DID YOU KNOW?

… that Ljubljana is the most beautiful city in the world? This has become the “mantra” of Ljubljana’s Mayor, Mr. Zoran Janković, in his public speeches and protocol welcome addresses. In truth its residents have identified with this statement. Not only are they proud of their city, but also express a high level of satisfaction with living in Ljubljana and are strongly in favour of welcoming visitors from abroad.

DID YOU KNOW?

… that in the warm season you can refill your bottle for free at a number of public drinking water fountains around the city? And there is a shortcut to them! The Tap Ljubljana Water application helps users find the nearest one among 17 locations by detecting their current location and displaying a map with a plotted route to point out the right direction. Set all worries aside while quenching your thirst, as the drinking water’s quality is being constantly monitored.

“Belgrade is not in Belgrade, because, in fact, Belgrade is not a city – it’s a metaphor, a way of life, a way of thinking.” – Momo Kapor

INTRO 2018

It is difficult to compare Belgrade with other central European capitals such as Vienna, Prague and Budapest. It has more in common with Athens, or even Berlin. This Balkan ‘Berlin’ is a city that constantly surprises with new corners, bars, hotels and other attractions. Belgrade is the only metropolis in the territory formerly known as Yugoslavia, and this fact, when combined with authentic Serbian friendliness and hospitality, makes an exceptional combination. Don’t expect shiny infrastructure and a clear historical perspective in Belgrade. A look behind the scenes isn’t altogether positive, fortunately, however, the city has a youthful, colourful and occasionally also Bohemian vibe. Therefore, congress guests will feel great in Belgrade.

Belgrade

NEED TO KNOW 2018

Belgrade is becoming the largest construction site in the Balkans. New hotels are opening one after another. In March this year the superior five-star Hilton hotel and the hip Mama Shelter hotel both opened at the same time. And this is just the start of significant investments in congress infrastructure in the city. March was also the conclusion of a tender for a public-private partnership project to renovate the Sava Centar – the largest congress centre in the Balkans. The sole partner that applied to the tender was the company Delta Holding, which, based on the contract, must invest a minimum of 12.5 million euros, by which it will become a 49% owner of the exceptionally important congress centre. The notorious ‘Belgrade on Water’ project is also very promising, where in 2019 a W. St. Regis hotel is due to open.

WHAT'S HOT 2018

Belgrade is breaking-through to the top of the region’s congress cities. Last year it occupied 51st place on the ICCA rankings, with 50 congresses recorded. This year’s season, according to local partners, will be even more successful. Below are some of the biggest events due to take place this year, among the sporting event of the year – the EuroBasket final.

The 14th Congress of the EFSM / 5 – 8 May 2018
The 14th Congress of the European Federation of Societies for Microsurgery with the joint events WSRM Half Day Symposium and EMTRA (European Microsurgical Training and Research Association) Symposium.

  • Venue: Hotel Metropol

Euroleague Final Four / 18 – 20 May 2018
The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four in Belgrade from 17 – 20 May will bring the top club event to the continent for the first time this century to a city that has had its fair share of big basketball events.

  • Venue: Belgrade Arena

The 41st Conference ECFC / 6 – 9 June 2018
The European Cystic Fibrosis Conference is aimed at improving the survival and quality of life for people with CF by promoting high-quality research, education and care. It is an international community of committed scientific and clinical professionals.

  • Venue: Sava Centar

WordCamp 2018 / 14 – 16 June 2018
WordCamp Belgrade, organised by the WordPress Foundation, will cover areas such as the community of WordPress business owners, developers, marketers, designers, content strategists and educators and many more.

  • Venue: Sava Centar

13th Annual Congress WFCCN & 10th UINARS / 25 – 28 October 2018
The World Federation of Critical Care Nurses meets annually across the globe to discuss, collaborate and prepare initiatives for the year ahead.

  • Venue: Sava Centar

DID YOU KNOW?
The legendary Sava Centar, which last year celebrated its 40th anniversary, is still the largest conference centre in the Balkans. The over 100,000m2 space includes 15 conference halls and a main auditorium with 3,672 seats and numerous accompanying rooms. By its anniversary year last year, it had hosted 35,000 cultural events, which had been attended by 15 million visitors. In addition, 10,000 congresses have taken place in the centre, which have been attended by 2 million visitors. Despite showing signs of wear and tear, the centre has a special charm, and is also famous for its exceptionally functional design. The new investor, Delta Holding, has ambitious plans that the renovated centre could accommodate from 6,000-7,000 congress guests.

BEST INCENTIVE IDEA

In terms of the development of incentive programmes in Belgrade, there is no lack of wacky ideas. Quite a number of them are nostalgically-led, and these are the ones we like the best. Whist the former Yugoslovia did not survive the test of time, everything connected to it is still fascinating for foreign visitors, including congress guests. A ride on Tito’s blue train, exploring the brutalist architecture in New Belgrade, and IMT tractor races – these are just some of the many options available from the numerous DMC and incentive agencies.

The range of authentic programmes is also attractive, such as those that allow visitors to find out more about Serbian cuisine, traditions and culture. Among the most popular are Rakia tours and various cookery courses.

PERFECT GIFT

Pinjunkie is the trademark of AleksandraTopić, a graphic communication student, who is involved with graphic design, photography, and designing t-shirts and brooches. These have also long been his favourite fashion accessories, therefore he has dedicated himself to them through his trademark. His first collection contains 15 sets, all of which are graphically strong, which is not surprising considering his background.

BEST KEPT SECRETS

Luxurious villas, luxury cars with tinted windows and security cameras warn visitors that they are entering a part of the city which many called ‘Serbia’s Beverly Hills’. In this area there are numerous villas and diplomatic residences, as well as the rich ‘upstarts’ that prospered following the break-up of Yugoslavia – the majority of which in a questionable way. The area was also home to the former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milošević, the turbofolk star Ceca, the widow of the notorious war criminal Željko Ražnatović Arkan, and the ill-reputed Karić family of businessmen. A guided tour of this part of the city is a special experience, where visitors can see the Royal Palace and the White Palace, as well as the House of Flowers mausoleum and the Museum of 25th May – the location of the grave of the former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito.

Why is Zagreb the New Meetings Star?

INTRO 2018

We visited Zagreb in the last minutes before the historical FIFA World Cup Final. The euphoria and positive energy which overtook the city were incredible and only a few remained indifferent to the atmosphere. Football really stops time and pushes all of the daily and other challenges into the background. However, Zagreb offers more than that and is becoming a supreme meetings and events destination. Recently, a lot of things have changed and the city has become a hot meetings spot. Deservingly, the city became the first meetings destination in the L-destinations for 2018 on the grounds of the MTLG methodology. The L-destinations are the destinations that host up to a maximum of 2,000 meeting participants. Zagreb has also greatly progressed in the ICCA ranking. There are many reasons for this, but the most visible is the ever better public infrastructure with a completely new and modern airport, with new hotels, and a persistent and consistent promotion of the city which has brought good results.

NEED TO KNOW 2018

Zagreb offers a lot more than just congress hotels and classical congress offer. The numerous venues impress the most. Their concentration is outstanding and this part of the offer puts Zagreb at the top of the region. The legacy of different periods of urbanisation today allows for events to be held in ultra-modern museums and the city’s magical atriums. Another novelty are the pop-up venues which really come to life in summer time and present an interesting alternative to the classical meeting venues. Next to the traditional museums as special venues – like the Art Pavilion, Croatian National Theatre, Croatian State Archives, the Illyirian Hall, the Mimara Museum – we were particularly impressed by the Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art. This art institution in Novi Zagreb (‘New Zagreb’) has been open to the public since 2009; its minimalistic and photogenic architecture, and the flexibility of the museum’s staff attract the event planners who, by prior arrangement, can combine a visit to permanent exhibitions with the concept of the event.

Big events organised by Zagreb Tourist Board:

Open air classical music festival with performances by leading Croatian and international orchestras, ensembles, conductors and soloists.

Advent in Zagreb / December 2, 2018  – January 7, 2019
During the Advent season, Zagreb offers a variety of events that will satisfy even the most demanding visitors. Plenty of fun, excellent food, unique events, art, but also a genuine Christmas atmosphere, await you on the streets of Croatia’s capital.

DID YOU KNOW?

Zagreb’s cultural abundance, expressed through diverse events, museums, theatres, and galleries, ranks Zagreb at the regional top. In warmer months, your congress guests can enjoy culture for free on Zagreb’s squares, streets and other, to tourists usually hidden, locations. There is so much going on in Zagreb that it is pretty much impossible to consume it all. We are especially impressed by the romantic Strossmayer Promenade full of musicians, art colonies, art installations and happenings. The pop-up venues are genius as well; for example, this year’s Foodbalerka which is some kind of a hybrid between an open kitchen and a festival of music, football, and gathering. Besides, Zagreb is the host of a series of music festivals, among which the INMusic festival is the ‘king’ that is ranked among the best festivals in the world, and annually visited by more than 50 thousand music enthusiasts. All of this provides to congress guests an added value that other cities in the region do not offer in such an extensive form.

BEST INCENTIVE IDEA

Secret Zagreb
We suggest you that you travel back to the past with the help of an urban adventure that takes to the city’s myths, legends, and actual events. The programme, guided by an energetic and unusual guide Iva Silla, reveals the stories about witches and dragons that caused the city’s earthquake in 1880, as well as many other stories that you will never hear during other tourist tours around town. The most popular programmes that you can choose from are the Ghosts and Dragons Tour and the Zagrebarium Quest which is an excellent case of gamification through the story of an unusual murder – while investigating the murder you will even stumble upon Nikola Tesla.

PERFECT GIFT

Kvadrati so Hrvati (The Squares are Croats)
The success of the Croatian football has spread the recognisable Croatian symbol, the red-and-white squares, all around the world. The red-and-white squares and the whole identity of the country are the work of an acknowledged Croatian avant-garde painter Miroslav Šutej. Time has confirmed the originality of his work and we recommend that when visiting Zagreb, you get yourself something with this typical brand as a memory of your visit to the Croatia’s capital. You can further upgrade your visit to Zagreb with a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Arts where a retrospective of this amazing artist is on display.

BEST KEPT SECRETS

Zagreb’s atriums and courtyards are not visible to visitors most of the time. I was always interested in what was hidden behind the heavy doors. I believe that each of the atriums and courtyards hides its own story. The surprising event called “Dvorišta – The Courtyards” reveals the stories of hidden courtyards in the Gornji grad (the “Upper Town”). The festival runs between 13 and 22 July and it links seven city courtyards; among them there are courtyards of private houses like the Šuflaj house, home of the great physicist Anton Šuflaj, the Balbi Palace where today the Old Church Slavonic Institute works, and all the way to the Tituš Brezovački Primary School which reveals an astonishing courtyard. In each of the seven courtyards, innovative culinary and musical surprises are offered to visitors. We believe that this kind of a project is an inspiration for event planners who will be able to organise their next event there.

OFF THE BEATEN MICE TRACK

Lauba, located in the Zagreb’s district of Črnomerec, is a modern gallery that soon after its opening in 2012 became a cool venue. Organisers appreciate the industrial character of the building which used to be the Zagreb Textile Factory and before that a riding arena within the Austro-Hungarian Cavalry Barracks. Its black facade looks elegant and proves that it is possible to beautifully renovate decaying cultural monuments. The mission of the gallery, which is privately owned by a Croatian entrepreneur and collector of contemporary arts Tomislav Klička, is to discover and present young local artists. At the same time, Lauba understands its commercial mission as well and offers space for concerts with 1,500 visitors, gala dinners for up to 500 guests, corporate events, etc. The space can be divided into smaller units which allows for execution of conferences.

Lauba is a cool space in which art, the past and incredible architectural aesthetics meet; this makes for a good starting point for event organisation. The gallery is located a few kilometres out of the city centre, has a large parking lot, and is accessible by public transport as well.

Zagreb is a pleasant and comfortable city for congress guests. And despite the fact that this is a city of more than one million residents, the city is compact and easily accessible. With a few strategic investments, among which the most important one is certainly the construction of a new airport terminal, Zagreb has become the leading regional meetings destination. The colour of the city is blue and the news that it is possibly to organise events in Zagreb has quickly spread around. Next to the adequate congress infrastructure, the green areas in form of lawns and mighty parks also greatly contribute to the high quality of stay for congress guests. We are also happy about the news that the project of a new congress centre is in its final phase; with this congress centre, Zagreb will additionally strengthen its leading position in the region.

SLEEPING CONGRESS BEAUTY

COMPARISON WITH THE REGION

Sofia is a typical transition convention destination, which needs some more quality of services and a connection of the meetings industry with creative industries. As a destination to discover Bulgaria Sofia has a lot to offer, yet it will have to internationalize its meetings industry and strengthen marketing. The biggest opportunity is in the added value of the destination unknown to the rest of congress Europe. Sofia needs to get rid of the image of a cheap congress destination of a lesser quality and become an internationally recognized congress brand. Sofia is a congress sleeping beauty caught between east and west.

PARIS OF THE EAST

COMPARISON WITH THE REGION

Bucharest is a city of contrasts in the field of congress tourism. Great palaces and the latest congress hotels but on the other hand poorly recognized brand and unrelated congress offer. These are the main disadvantages compared to the much more active cities such as Belgrade and Sofia in the vicinity. But at this moment it is certainly the most affordable major European Congress Capital. With a little effort you will find everything you need for any events. Even the friendliness of the staff in the hotel and congress sector deviates from the average. It appears that the city is missing a little bit more energy so it can be placed alongside big cities, where it actually falls depending on its situation and the conditions for the congress industry development. On a scale of ICCA in 2012 occupied 85 place with 28 congresses, and depending on the conditions it could be ranked much higher.

POSITIVE SPIN

COMPARISON WITH THE REGION

The Russian capital is one of the biggest cities in the world, but what makes it really special is not its size. First mentioned in 1147, Moscow has a way of interlacing its historical roots with a very modern way of life. The city’s congress industry, offering everything from the most modern congress centres to the more traditional providers, reflects that intertwinement. The list of venues goes on forever and encompasses everything from luxurious hotels of international chains to excellent congress centres. The size of the city isn’t the only thing that’s hefty, as Moscow has also become known as the most expensive city in the world. This somewhat dampens its competitiveness, but Moscow is nevertheless a great host for any kind of event.

SUNNY OUTLOOK

COMPARISON WITH THE REGION

Sevilla is a city that grows on you with its relaxed approach, friendly locals, rich cultural heritage and a typical Spanish temperament that all attracts meeting planners. Almost every sign, building and alleyway tells a story about the city’s historical and cultural meaning. Sevilla’s leading congress provider is the legendary FIBES Congress Centre. The city is also home to some amazing hotels, connected by the well-organised Sevilla Convention Bureau. As a university city, it hosts a lot of international associations and as the artistic and financial capital of Spain also attracts many corporate events. Just one friendly piece of advice – don’t bother going to Sevilla in the Summer, as the 40+ Celsius temperatures will leave you soaking wet. In our opinion, Andalusia is best enjoyed in the Spring or Fall.

A CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS

COMPARISON WITH THE REGION

Belgrade bases its congress story on the rich culture at the crossroads of East and West, the central position in the South-East Europe and a lively social life. It is a city with remarkable cuisine, world-class nightlife, world events and positive vibrations, which makes it a very dynamic and attractive tourist destination. Belgrade is a city on the rise and a rough congress diamond, which has enormous development potential. With the establishment of the Serbian Convention Bureau in 2007, co-operation and promotion has thoroughly improved and now Belgrade has in terms of management a unique opportunity to take advantage of its benefits, provided so the complete infrastructure can be thoroughly renewed.

SIZE DOES MATTER

COMPARISON WITH THE REGION

Current support of local politics and the economy in the region is more an exception than a rule. Although the country has recently found itself in a whirlwind of protests and political instability, it seems that this does not affect the meetings industry and the Turkish congress tiger is relentlessly growling and overcoming everything set in front of it. If personal hospitality could be combined with the proverbial German precision, the route to congress superstardom would be completely open. Professionalism and entrepreneurship when they are competing for international events is not lacking and they could be setting an example to other convention bureaus. Perhaps the biggest rival is Barcelona, which with its facilities and overall support is also able to host the biggest events.

ON THE MAKE

COMPARISON WITH THE REGION

Baku is the capital city of ‘the land of fire’ by the Caspian Sea which has lately been turning into a Dubai of the Caucasus. Oil and gas revenues have given Azerbaijan the chance to develop in different fields, with the congress industry being one of them. Investment in infrastructure has seen the rise of first-class hotels and architectural pearls, such as The Heydar Aliyev Centre designed by Zaha Hadid. It’s simply astonishing to see how fast and how many projects are being realised in the country. A turning point in terms of mega events was definitely the Eurovision contest, hosted in 2012, which was a proper test run and one that proved that Baku is capable of hosting big projects and has a lot of potential in the congress industry scene.
